How and Why I Started Cloth Diapering

How and Why I Started Cloth Diapering??

I first was introduced to cloth diapering when my mom started doing so with her baby, about 6 ½ years ago now. Mom wanted to get away from the chemicals and how not-earth friendly disposable diapers are and the baby was having allergic reactions to them.

We researched a ton and made up patterns to make our own fitted pocket cloth diapers. Now, today I’m still using those original patterns on my own babies.

That’s how I started using cloth diapers, now to the MANY reasons why I started and still cloth diaper.

Cloth Diapering is Healthier
I can’t even begin to tell you all the chemicals and things that are bad for your baby that are in disposable diapers. "Disposable diapers contain sodium polyacrylate, a type of super absorbent polymer (SAP), which becomes a gel-like substance when wet. A similar substance was used until the early 1980s when it was revealed that the material increased the risk of toxic shock syndrome by increasing absorbency and improving the environment for the growth of toxin-producing bacteria."

Cloth Diapering Saves Money
The initial investment to get into cloth diapers is of course more expensive than just 1 package of disposable diapers but, the long run is much less expensive. Cloth diapers are a 1 time investment, not $20+ a package every time you run to the store. It is estimated that a baby will go through 6,000 diapers in the first 2 years and that parents will spend $1,600 for two years of disposable diapers. If you buy cloth diapers that are $20.00 each you can buy 80 diapers (many more than you need) with that amount. Cloth diapers last more than just one child too so you are saving $1600 each child you have after your first child. With the money we save each year cloth diapering we are able to slowly replace old and worn out cloth diapers.

Cloth Diapering is Easy
Most people think of cloth diapers and they think of tons of stinky work and disgusting messes to clean up. With the modern cloth diapers this day it is so much easier than that! I use a dry pail method, so basically I just change diapers (dump if needed) and place them in a pail then; when I’m ready to wash them I just dump them all in the washer. I do a rinse cold wash first with NO detergents and then do a second HOT wash with Tropical Traditions Detergent and Oxygen Bleach. I wash daily to every other day to keep bacterial from growing.  In the summer time I hang the diapers on the line outside and during the cold months I hang them on a rack similar to this one. Now there's no more rush trips to the store because you ran out of diapers. : )

Cloth Diapering is better on the Environment
Do you know that all the diapers that have EVER been made and used are still sitting in a landfill somewhere? It is estimated but NOT known how long to breakdown a disposable diaper, but the estimate is 250-500 years!! “Disposable diapers generate sixty times more solid waste and use twenty times more raw materials, like crude oil and wood pulp”

Cloth Diapering makes for less Rashes
Did you know that “Diaper rash was almost unheard of before the use of rubber or plastic pants in the 1940s”. I know my babies hardly get rashes and most of them are caused by food allergies. Cloth diapers really do help cut down rashes.

Cloth Diapering makes it easier to Potty Train
Now this is still one point I’m waiting to find out but it is said that babies who have worn cloth diapers potty train much faster. Since disposable diapers have chemicals in them to keep the baby dry they never learn the feeling of getting wet when they go potty. So, when you try to teach them to go potty on the toilet they have a much harder time figuring it out. My son is 2 and I’m going to start potty training really soon. So, now I’ll see. : )

Do you cloth diaper? What are some of your reasons for choosing cloth diapers?

Babee Covee 6 in 1 Baby Blanket {Review & Coupon Code!}

Today I have a fun review to share.  This is a baby blanket that I've fallen in love with.  It's such a fun and super useful blanket.

The Babee Covee is a blanket that is designed to be used for 6+ things in just 1 blanket, cutting down the amount you have to bring when packing for your baby. All mothers know how much there can be to pack when you have little ones to care for.  There's so many things to try to keep from forgetting, even when just running a small errand.

This blanket is to be used as a car seat, stroller, high chair, shopping cart, nursing cover, and playtime blanket.

My favorite uses for this blanket are the car seat cover, stroller and playtime blanket.  I find the blanket too small for my liking as a nursing cover.  We don't go out to eat very often and then I hold my baby most of the times when we are out, so I haven't used it many times for a high chair cover.
The Babee CoveeTM has become a baby gear must have. This luxury 6-in-1 multi-use, baby blanket and cover eliminates bulk, saves money and makes traveling a snap with baby while creating a clean, germ-free area wherever you go! Its six uses are: 1) car seat "tent" cover 2) nursing cover 3) shopping cart cover 4) high chair cover 5) stroller blanket and 6) playtime blanket.
This blanket is made from really soft fabrics and satin edges.  I love how soft it is and all babies I have known love satin edged blankets. :) I have the green and brown Babee Covee, now they have it in 8 additional colors.
You can visit Babee Covee more on:

If you are interested in getting your own Babee Covee you can get $5.00 off your order with coupon code: 5Babee.  Also they have monthly giveaways on their Facebook page. :)

Monthly Baby Onesie Stickers from StickerPlus Etsy Shop - Review

"StickerPlus - Monthly baby onesie stickers with the best price and fast shipping. They are waterproof and printed on the highest quality white sticker paper. We have round circle stickers for girls and boys, shaped neck ties for boys and cute shapes like owls and stars for both. They make the nicest baby shower gift for the new mommy to be :)"

I got the Forest Animal Sticker set to try.  They are so cute, it would have been fun to have had then since my baby was just born.  In this set that I got StickerPlus includes a FREE just born sticker too! :-)  There are 13 stickers in the set, one for each month, each sticker is 3.9 inches around.  I think it's a perfect size, it isn't too big for the outfit but still you can tell what month!  I love to take pictures of my babies and these are just perfect for the "monthly" pictures. :-)

Just a small sampling of all the cute different stickers!!
It's very easy to put these stickers on to use, just peel them off the sheet and put onto your baby's outfit, just like another sticker. :-)   The stickers are printed on high quality waterproof matte sticker paper with a white background.  4 stickers per sheet.  The sticker did end up getting pretty messed up within a few hours after the baby wore it but they are meant especially for taking a monthly picture with. :-)  Make sure you are ready to take a picture when you put the sticker on the baby. :-)

If you'd like a chance to win a set of Onesie stickers from StickerPlus, come back during the Just for Baby Giveaway Event that starts July 30th and ends August 10th to enter the giveaway (featuring several other prizes as well!)! Winner will be able to choose any set they want 1-12 or 12-24 months.

Organic Woombie Swaddler Review

Swaddle your baby Safely and Effectively with The Woombie ... designed to ease your mind and comfort your baby so you may both achieve a better nights sleep. The Woombie is the safest & most NATURAL way to Swaddle your baby, encouraging baby to softly stretch extremities as needed, just like in the womb. The Woombie comforts, softly confines arms & gently compresses baby's unique curves to hug baby... preventing Startling issues, face scratching, overheating and also preventing   dangerous loose unraveled blankets from covering baby's face.

The Woombie is a proud winner of the PTPA (Parent Tested Parent Approved), Moms Best and Creative Child Awards. We have been seen on television, in numerous popular baby magazines and are endorsed by Doctors, Doulas, Postpartum Baby Instructors, Nurses and countless moms and dads worldwide. In a nutshell, The Woombie is a great easy swaddle for babies with the Startle Reflex & who are in need of a cozy yet gentle confinement.

Comfortable:
  • Soft, ECO cotton fabric gently hugs baby
  • Baby feels secure, not confined, easing transition from WOMB to World!
Safe:
  • Follows Pediatrician & S.I.D.S. guidelines
  • Maintains airflow and will not overheat baby
  • No loose blankets covering airways
  • Prevents face scratching
Effective:
  • Prevents unnecessary waking due to the Startle Reflex
  • Soothes babies with colic
  • Will not come undone
  • Promotes natural motor development
  • Easy to use, just zip it up

Our newest baby (Baby J) loves being swaddled.  Blankets nice and tight make him happy.  When I found Woombie's site I thought the would just love one of their swaddlers.

I was able to try out the Organic Woombie Swaddler in size newborn (he has well grown out of now, he'd need a much bigger one now).  It was perfect and he loved it!

The fabric is nice and soft and it fit him perfectly.  The woombie zips up from both the top or bottom, making it really easy to get onto your baby.  I used it mainly from the top. Behind the zipper is a strip of fabric so you don't have to worry about pinching your baby.  I always put it on him over clothes (I believe it is supposed to be used that way).  To cover the zipper tab (the thing you pull the zipper up and down with) is a super soft tab.  This snaps over and keeps the zipper metal from poking the baby's face/chin.

Woombie now has a new swaddler with legs.  This allows you to use the swaddler in strollers, swings, bouncy seats, etc.  I would love to have one like this since my baby loves his swing and the stroller.  This would also be an easy way to keep a light blanket on your baby during walks.  The baby wouldn't be able to pull or push it off.

Woombie has many different types of swaddlers, including summer and winter ones. You can purchase Woombie swaddlers directly from the online site. Go check it out!

If you'd like a chance to win an Organic Woombie swaddler like the one I received, come back during the Just for Baby Giveaway Event that starts July 30th and ends August 10th to enter the giveaway (featuring several other prizes as well!)!

**Disclaimer - I received one of the mentioned above products for the purpose of this review.  The. opinions written here are my own. Thank you Woombie!

Juppy Baby Walker Review {and Giveaway!}

"Introducing the Juppy...

An alternative to dangerous wheeled baby walkers that eliminates the stress and strain on the parents back while the baby safely learns to walk.
  • Teaches baby balance and builds confidence.
  • Reduces the chance of accident and injuries.
  • The only baby walker that fits in a purse!"
Holding your baby's hands when they are learning to walk can be a tiring job and add a lot of strain to your back.  With this Juppy Baby Walker you no longer have to bend over to steady your baby as they walk.  It's actually super neat!  I really liked it.  My boy is a bit old and used to walking really well to use this but he let us try it on him and it was really helpful!  It will be a back saver when our next baby starts to walk! :)
The Juppy Baby Walker comes with this perfect and neat bag to carry your baby walker in when not in use.  This bag can easily fit into your diaper bag or purse for when you are out with your baby.
The Juppy is made of 100% cotton fabric that is super thick and durable.  Made very well and will endure a lot of use! :)  The zipper in the photo below makes it easy to get your baby into quickly.

I got my Juppy in just a few days after they shipped it - it was super fast.  The Juppy baby walker comes in 3 colors: Blue, Pink, & Black with full lining.  For an additional cost you can even get your baby's name embroidered onto your walker.  You can also get the Juppy Walker without any lining (it'd probably be cooler for the baby in the summer time) in black.

You can find out more about the Juppy Baby Walker on their site, Twitter, Facebook, or their Blog.

Watch this video to see the Juppy in use:

Juppy Baby Walker is giving away 1 Baby Walker to one of my readers!  The winner can choose which color they want (Pink or Blue) and have a name embroidered on it!  That's worth $36.90!  To enter this giveaway follow the guidelines in the Rafflecopter form below!

Getting Ready for Baby - Crochet Baby Hats {Pink & White}

I'm so excited about having our second baby in March!  In preparation to having a new little one soon I've been making baby hats.  I love to crochet and these are so easy and fast!  They will be perfect for keeping our little one's head nice and warm during these chilly wintery days

As we don't know our baby's gender I'm going to be making both girl and boy ones. :-)  I know several other women pregnant and due after me so I can give the extra hats away or keep them for a future baby (Lord willing)!

First I made this one - I used this easy tutorial and added a little bow.

This one I made with the same tutorial as above.

This one is preemie but it probably will fit as we're thinking this baby is going to by tiny like our first.  I used this tutorial.  This is the same yarn as the first one but looks different due to lighting. :)

 {Same hat as above just different view}

Now I'm planning on making some boy colored hats (brown, blue, green) after I can get into town and get some new yarn.  I already had these yarns on hand so I made them first. :)

I found several other really cute hat patterns that you can see here I hope to make someday! :)

Honeymoon Baby

Today's society says that children are nuisances. They make life harder and cost lots of money.  The Bible says much on children and the blessing they are.

Behold, children are a heritage from the LORD, The fruit of the womb is a reward. Psalms 127:3

Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it; Genesis 1:28

Your wife shall be like a fruitful vine In the very heart of your house, Your children like olive plants All around your table. Psalms 128:3

Her children rise up and call her blessed; Proverbs 31:28

Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning. James 1:17

My husband and I were married for under a month before we found out that we were expecting our first child.  It didn't come as much of a surprise to us as we had decided before our marriage that we would allow the Lord to determine when we were ready to have children and how many children we would have.  We were so overjoyed to be blessed with a precious baby so soon!  We had been taught by our wonderful parents the amazing treasure and blessing each and every child is.

Many would probably say our choice to have children so early in our marriage was a bad one.  We should have spent more married time as 'just a couple' and not had the distraction of having a baby there.  Learning more about each other and married life.
But, my husband and I can't image our lives any other way.  Our first born son, born 8 months after our wedding (born at 37 weeks - 3 weeks early) has brought us so much joy and taught us so many priceless lessons!

I don't have my house spotlessly clean everyday, toys are often spread out on our floor, laundry is never caught up, and we didn't/don't have fancy romantic dinners every night, but I have an adorable little son to train and teach the ways of the Lord to.

And having a child hasn't brought stress to our marriage - it has strengthened it!  It hasn't separated my husband and I - it has brought us closer.  It has taught my husband and I how to seek the Lord for strength and courage for the rough times and to thank and praise Him for the many blessings and fun times!!

Today as I played with my now 15 month old - I was thinking about all the little and big things we would have missed if we didn't allow the Lord to bless us with him early in our marriage.
I wouldn't have been hearing his precious laugh today as I was playing peek-a-boo with him.
I wouldn't be hearing his sweet little voice say "Momma" & "Dadda" everyday.
I wouldn't be getting kisses from him at nap time and bed time - and other times spread out the day.
I wouldn't be seeing him play with his horses for hours and then say "horse" for the first time.
I wouldn't have the hundreds of pictures of him that I've already taken.
I wouldn't have learned first hand the joys of motherhood and the preciousness of a newborn in your arms.

Children are a huge responsibility and a precious soul that takes much time and love to train - but in every way worth it!  The scripture promises that if we do our jobs as parents right our children will not depart from the training.

"Train up a child in the way he should go, And when he is old he will not depart from it."
Proverbs 22:6

In March we will be welcoming a second child to our house - as I carry this child and feel it move I am overjoyed for the blessing it will be and we're excitedly waiting for it's arrival.

Two years ago on Christmas Day we found out we were expecting our first blessing from the Lord, our lives have been forever changed and when we are old we will be happy & blessed!
